COLL 109: GONGBI STYLE CHINESE PAINTING

What makes a Chinese painting so distinctive, so immediately recognizable as Chinese? This course examines the characteristics of Chinese painting and its embodiment of Chinese ideology and aesthetic orientation through hands-on painting experience of the Gongbi style. Gongbi (or the Meticulous Style) is a careful realist technique in Chinese painting, meticulous in shape, neatness, and coloring. This course aims to cultivate students' form observing ability so that students can master the basic techniques of line drawing and coloring in Gongbi style. Students will be taught how to use the unique language of "Gongbi" to create a Chinese floral painting. No prior painting experience is required.
