Spring 2025 · Section 001 · CRN 27156

This course introduces students to basic chemistry concepts while exploring how those concepts intersect with important questions in the field of African American Studies and how they illuminate issues related to racial justice in the United States. Using a case study approach, this course will focus, for instance, on the chemistry underlying environmental crises and chronic disease as well as the chemistry of skin pigmentation and hair. Attention to equity in scientific education, and to the work of historic and contemporary Black chemists and other diverse scientists frames the course throughout.
