MUSI 552: PIANO LITERATURE I

Fall 2025 · Section 001 · CRN 15611

This lecture course will present an in-depth survey of piano (keyboard) repertoire from its origins until approximately 1900. While the curriculum will primarily focus on notable keyboard repertoire and composers from the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, and Romantic Eras, additional areas of study will include the evolution of the piano, keyboard notation before the 17th century, stylistic performance, and significant performers. Students will identify one or more areas of academic interest within the repertoire in preparation for a capstone project at the end of the semester. This is a required course for MM piano majors; it is also open to undergraduate piano majors and non-pianist music majors pursuing their undergraduate or Master’s as an elective credit.
