Summer 2026 · Section 701 · CRN 31320

This course develops students’ pragmatic competence and interactional communication skills in Chinese within culturally situated contexts. Students analyze and practice authentic spoken and written discourse to understand how meaning is co-constructed, shaped by conventions, audience design, and context. Emphasis is placed on interactional practices such as turn-taking, repair, politeness, stance-taking, and relationship management. A fieldwork component in Taipei involves observation and interviews, enabling students to collect and analyze real language data to identify sociocultural norms and communicative conventions.
