FREN 300: FRENCH IN ACTION
Summer 2026 · Section 701 · CRN 31328
This course, part of the Rice in France program, focuses on developing advanced proficiency in the four key language skills while placing a strong emphasis on intercultural competence in French through immersive experiences uniquely available in a French-speaking country. Students will engage in pragmatic and meaningful communication tasks that leverage the local context, including interactions with host families, shopkeepers, local students, and language consultants. These experiences will offer opportunities to practice interactions using varied speech registers and culturally informed language practices. In addition, students will strengthen their intercultural communication skills by learning to navigate cultural differences, compare perspectives, and adapt their language use to diverse social contexts. At the same time, the course provides intensive practice in advanced written French by expanding students’ ability to express nuanced ideas in writing. By the end, students will confidently engage in culturally and contextually appropriate conversations, demonstrating a nuanced understanding of French pragmatics, societal norms, intercultural dynamics, and cultural subtleties, skills essential for effective communication in global contexts. This course is part of the Rice in Country program and is not eligible for audit.
