CLAS 228: EPIC JOURNEYS
Spring 2027 · Section 001 · CRN 26864
This course explores the literary paradigm of the epic journey, which involves leaving home for a potentially perilous venture, unlocking new wisdom through ordeals, and returning to find a familiar place suddenly strange. Beginning with two of the earliest such tales, we will travel through ancient and medieval traditions to modern manifestations of the motif. Readings will be anchored in Greco-Roman literature with a secondary focus on Middle Irish voyage tales. All sources are presented in English.
