COLL 171: HEALTH BEHIND BARS

Spring 2027 · Section 001 · CRN 26937

This course will appeal to pre-med, public health, or health policy students interested in the criminal justice system. Clinicians often have to deal with the public health impacts of the public safety system while lacking the resources to address structural conditions that produce them. Students will first examine the values and assumptions about the criminal justice system that form the phenomenon of mass incarceration. Then, students will examine historical and contemporary examples of prison policies that shape the short- and long-term health of incarcerated people in prison settings and in the broader community. Students will engage with scholarship in carceral epidemiology, public health, and prison conditions litigation to examine how legal and policy interventions can address health disparities created by the criminal justice system, both within correctional institutions and in the broader community.
