Adolf Hitler infamously turned to politics after a failed career as an artist, and historians have long noted the centrality of aesthetic projects—from art and film to buildings and pageantry—to Fascist regimes. This class aims to explore this relationship, and in the process to deepen our understanding of both Fascism as a political idea and the relationship of art and politics more broadly. Our examination of this topic will cut across space and time, considering art, architecture, film, and everyday culture. Readings will span history, film studies, art history, and political theory.
