Eugene Zubarev

Associate Professor of Chemistry

Our research is focused on the synthesis and characterization of colloidal metallic nanostructures. We are mainly interested in self-assembly of these hybrid structures, which may result in emergence of previously unseen physical and chemical properties. Unraveling the mechanisms of molecular self-assembly and establishing its dependence on the chemical structure is the long-term goal of our research. Specifically, there are three ongoing projects in our group: 1) Synthesis of well-defined gold nanorods with various aspect ratios, their covalent functionalization with polymer chains, and the self-organization of nanocrystals into ring-like superstructures using the "breath figures" effect, 2) Synthesis of taxol-functionalized gold nanoparticles, their self-assembly in aqueous solutions, and study of their anticancer and biological activity, and 3) Amphiphilic gold, platinum, and palladium nanoparticles, formation of their well-defined aggregates in solution, and their ability to catalyze organic reactions.

Matthew Brake

Associate Professor

Dr. Brake's research broadly encompasses the fields of: - Nonlinear Dynamics - Nonlinear Mechanics - Contact/Interface Mechanics/Tribology - Numerical Methods - Vibration - Uncertainty Quantification - Additive Manufacturing - Applied Mathematics for Mechanical Engineering The central question of Dr. Brake’s research is how can we design and predict the response of an assembled structure that contains strong nonlinearities. This research is strongly motivated by the aerospace, defense, and automotive industries. To this end, the focus of Dr. Brake’s recent research has been constitutive modeling for impact dynamics, joint mechanics, the application of additive manufacturing for designing system level assemblies, and the application of a branch of complex number theory (termed hyper dual numbers) to developing parameterized models. Presently, there are multiple positions available in Dr. Brake’s Mechadynamics Laboratory, including (but not limited to) interfacial mechanics, application of complex number theory to mechanical engineering, and additive manufacturing.

Norman Hackerman-Welch Assistant Professor of Chemistry

The Shee Lab aspires to develop and apply ab initio computational methods to accurately model chemical systems exhibiting both weak and strong correlations. In particular, we are most interested in the electronic structure of transition metal and f-block compounds in the contexts of chemical catalysis and magnetism, and specialize in quantum Monte Carlo techniques and algorithms amenable to quantum computation. Related research interests involve nuclear quantum effects, (anti)aromaticity, and the development of semi-classical potentials for the simulation of, e.g., metal cofactors in drug design and metal organic frameworks.

Both laser-cooled atomic ions and neutral atoms in electromagnetic traps provide pristine quantum systems that can be engineered from the ground up to an unprecedented level of control. Atoms interacting with lasers offer unmatched coherence properties, deterministic entanglement generation and nearly perfect detection of individual quantum systems. In our lab we will use trapped ions and neutral atoms to assemble atom-by-atom quantum systems whose parameters can be tailored microscopically to investigate unexplored quantum many-body phenomena and tackle new ways of processing quantum information.

B.J. Fregly

Trustee Professor and CPRIT Scholar in Cancer Research

Dr. Fregly's research focuses on the modeling, simulation, and optimization of the human neuromusculoskeletal system to design personalized clinical treatments for movement disorders caused by stroke, osteoarthritis, cancer, and Parkinson's disease. Unique aspects of his research program include integration of modeling methods for both the human musculoskeletal system and the human neural control system, calibration of patient-specific neuromusculoskeletal models using patient movement and imaging data, prediction of post-treatment patient function for different treatment scenarios under consideration, and validation of model predictions using experimental data to support model use for clinical treatment planning. The primary technical skills required for these research efforts include multibody dynamics, numerical methods (especially optimization), contact mechanics, and computer programming (mainly Matlab and C++). While Dr. Fregly's past research has focused on developing neurorehabilitation treatments for walking impairments, his future research is expanding to include surgical treatments for walking impairments and robotic rehabilitation treatments for upper extremity impairments. Dr. Fregly's primary collaborators within the department include Drs. Marcia O'Malley, Fred Higgs, Ed Akin, and Matthew Brake. Collaborators in the Texas Medical Center include clinicians and researchers from the Department of Orthopaedic Oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center, the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at UT Health, and the NeuroRecovery Research Center at TIRR Memorial Hermann.

The focus of his study are materials in which electrons interact strongly with each other, resulting in a very different behaviour from ordinary metals such as aluminium and copper. One of the examples are the heavy fermion metals, so called because the electrically charged particles of which they consist, the fermions, are unlike ordinary electrons. The reason these electrons are unique, is because the interactions between them are so strong that they acquire a very heavy mass, often several hundred times greater than that of a bare electron. As a result of this heaviness, many material properties are profoundly affected. In particular, the electric current and thermal heat flow differently through these materials at low temperatures. In addition, exotic quantum phases can form from this strange metallic state, such as unconventional superconductivity, that defy theoretical explanation. The reason why most metals look qualitatively similar at cryogenic temperatures, is because their behavior is dictated by their lightest constituents – the electrons. Electrons obey special rules, and rather than being a gas of particles, they form what is called a Fermi liquid, or a Fermi sea. One can think of the response to an external probe as ripples and waves on the surface of this sea. In ordinary metals, these waves all look almost identical, described by the Landau Fermi liquid theory, which lies at the foundations of the modern theory of metals. The heavy fermion materials are different. They are typically composed of f-electron elements, such as cerium or plutonium, with CeCoIn5, YbRh2Si2, PuCoGa5 as examples. By applying pressure or chemical doping, these materials can be tuned to the so-called quantum phase transition, where a magnetic phase disappears at absolute zero temperature. It is near this special point that the strange metal state is formed and exotic phases, such as superconductivity, emerge. To study the properties of these phases, Dr Nevidomskyy employs a combination of the realistic electron band theory, which takes into account the details of chemical and structural composition, and the state-of-the-art analytical and numerical techniques to solve the effective many-body problem. The methodologies used include the cluster dynamical mean-field theory (CDMFT), large-N expansion and Schwinger boson techniques. It is hoped that this combined approach will help shed light on the properties of the non-Fermi liquid `strange metal' state and accompanying emergent phenomena, such as the unconventional superconductivity. This research is relevant not only to the heavy fermion materials, but equally to the high-temperature superconductors in the family of cuprates and the recently discovered iron-based compounds.

Anthony Chan

Professor, Physics and Astronomy

Professor Chan's primary research area is the acceleration and transport of energetic particles in space plasmas, particularly relativistic electrons in Earth's magnetosphere. This work involves theory and simulation of the dynamics of relativistic particles in magnetospheric electromagnetic fields, including motion in large-scale fields and in a variety of electromagnetic plasma waves. Relativistic electrons are of great interest because it is not well understood how they are accelerated to such high energies and because these particles are potentially harmful to technological systems and to humans in space. Recently Dr. Chan and his research group have been collaborating on a number of projects to develop advanced theoretical models of relativistic electron dynamics. Research on the relativistic electrons is undertaken with researchers at the University of Colorado in Boulder and at the University of Iowa, and with other Rice faculty.

My work addresses open questions in the fields of high energy particle physics and cosmology. Most notably I have endeavored to understand the origin matter / antimatter asymmetry of the universe using the techniques of quantum field theory, particle physics, and statistical mechanics. Additionally, I continue to study the nature of dark matter; the mechanism of cosmological inflation; the origin, evolution, and detection of primordial magnetic fields; the power of future collider experiments to probe Higgs physics and the complementarity with gravitational wave interferometry as a probe of the electroweak epoch; and the extent to which astrophysical observations can be used to search for and uncover relics from the early universe.

Evelyn Tang

Assistant Professor, Physics and Astronomy

Prof. Tang is a theoretical physicist engaged in the study of living and active matter. Such systems exhibit various emergent dynamics necessary for system regulation, growth, and motility. However, how robust dynamics arises from stochastic and heterogeneous components remains poorly understood. For instance, why are living systems able to exhibit time-scales much longer than those of the underlying components, e.g. in the circadian rhythm or in stable memories? Her goal is to develop physical theories that describe and predict these and other striking out-of-equilibrium phenomena. Towards these aims, Tang uses statistical mechanics, information theory, and dynamical theory to characterize emergent function. She particularly enjoys using topology and geometry to predict robust dynamics in novel and accessible platforms, from quantum to biological systems. Other interests include learning and optimal navigation, as well as information flow in fluids, networks and active matter.

My primary research has involved the development and use of a novel diffuse reflector material for various types of optical and spectroscopic applications. In particular, I have the led the development of a new type of integrating cavity absorption spectroscopy involving the temporal decay of the light in the cavity. This provides a very sensitive technique for measuring absorption coefficients, even when the sample produces strong scattering. More recently, I have also been involved in a number of projects that use our diffuse reflector material for a variety of biomedical applications.

Peter Wolynes

Bullard-Welch Foundation Professor of Chemistry

The research in my group is broadly concerned with many-body phenomena in biology, chemistry and physics. A major theme is understanding systems where a large diversity of long-lived states is involved, necessitating the use of a statistical characterization of an energy or attractor landscape. The most notable examples are glasses, liquids, biomolecules and biomolecular regulatory networks. In the area of protein folding we are interested both in describing folding kinetics in the laboratory and the development of bioinformatically based schemes for predicting structure from sequence using computer simulation. A key concept is that the energy landscape of a foldable protein looks like a rugged funnel. This idea guides the development of both simple folding kinetics models and structure prediction algorithms. Similar issues of attractor landscapes also arise in higher order biological processes, such as gene recognition and genetic network regulation, which we also study. The energy landscapes of supercooled liquids and glasses also present interesting problems. We have shown how a new approach based on "random first order transitions" explains many quantitative relations found empirically both in liquids and under cryogenic conditions where quantum effects play a role. The same ideas show promise in the study of systems as different as high temperature superconductors, polymer assemblies, and microemulsions. They are also useful for describing the three-dimensional structure and dynamics of chromosomes and the interior of living cells.

As an experimental condensed matter physicist, I am broadly interested in discovering, understanding, and controlling emergent phenomena in quantum materials, where electron correlations, topology, and/or constrained dimensionality give rise to a wide range of fascinating behaviors in high temperature superconductors, toplogical materials, heavy fermion systems, density wave systems, etc. I am interested in advancing the fundamental microscopy understanding of these materials and pushing the boundary of such understanding to create new exotic phenomena. To achieve these goals, I am interested in using and advancing experimental tools such as angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and x-ray scattering to probe both the single-particle and collective excitations of these materials. As these enchantingly elusive quantum orders often exhibit a multifaceted nature, this multimodal approach of utilizing complementary techniques allows us to form a powerful and holistic view of the properties of quantum materials. The technical tools that let us access these arenas combined with the ability to tune via carrier doping or chemical pressure by ways of crystal synthesis not only allow us to probe and understand the multitude of electronic quantum phases, but also to actively promote jovial cooperation, belligerent competition, or even inextricable intertwining of these quantum orders—revealing some of the most beautiful symmetries of our universe through the perspective of correlated quantum materials exhibiting emergent phenomena.

David Alexander

Professor, Physics and Astronomy

Dr. Alexander's main area of interest is the study of the dynamic solar corona via the analysis and theoretical interpretation of thermal and non-thermal radiation. His primary contributions have been in the area of solar flare and CME physics where he has developed theoretical models for the production of gamma-rays, hard X-rays, and soft X-ray line broadening. Currently, he is involved with a number of projects relating to understanding the initiation and evolution of solar flares and CMEs by exploring particle production in association with, magnetic topology, helicity injection and filament eruptions. He has recently led a study investigating the long-term behaviour of solar active regions in their build-up to large Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) events. Dr. Alexander has recently started exploring a number of other areas including star-planet interactions with a focus on apply what we learn in the solar system to other extrasolar systems and to the development of novel instrumentation for earth observing. Dr. Alexander is working with colleagues in the Department of Engineering to develop a novel snapshot hyperspectral imager for unique earth observation applications.

The synthesis of the game-changing molecules of modern life, from powerful therapeutics to next-generation materials, requires ever-better chemical tools. We are deeply interested in designing new methods of transforming simple starting materials into functional molecules by leveraging unusual mechanisms and creative combinations of reagents. Design of unprecedented catalytic systems using earth abundant elements is key for enabling the new reactions we hope to deliver to the synthetic community. We will read broadly and cultivate wide chemical interests to inform our approach to catalyst design, taking cues from both nature and chemists. Great progress has been made in the design and synthesis of powerful therapeutic and diagnostic molecules for oncology; however, it is clear that many compounds we seek to synthesize are impossible using state-of-the-art organic chemistry methods, especially in the fields of late-state molecule diversification and bioconjugation. We will overcome this challenge by delivering first-in-class chemical reactions that enable the diversification of promising bioactive agents via catalytic C–H functionalization and the efficient, site-specific coupling of biomolecules. A Culture of Innovation is possible only if every member of an organization is able to contribute creatively to its mission. We strive to create an environment that empowers every group member to contribute their unique ideas and supports them in following their scientific interests. Our diversity of backgrounds, motivations, and ideas is our greatest strength and we should make the most of it.

Central to our research program is the discovery of new reactivities and guiding principles for the synthesis of complex molecules. We are especially attracted to problems encountered at the frontiers of organic synthesis, where the development of new solutions and approaches is highly desirable and necessary. Natural products provide a powerful setting to examine and study methods as well as to bridge organic synthesis and human medicine. Our research in the area of natural products is placed on identification and analysis of new chemotypes that display promising therapeutic potential and are characterized by novel or unknown activities to disease-related biomolecules. The main research interests of the group are the target-driven as well as methodology-driven synthesis of structurally complex, biologically active natural products where fresh approaches and methods culminate in innovative design and efficient outcomes. Additionally, our group is intensely involved in the discovery and development of catalytic asymmetric transformations as well as stoichiometric processes. Specifically, the focus is on transformations that fundamentally expand the retrosynthetic arsenal and provide access to high-value-added compounds.

Despite rapid advances in synthetic organic chemistry, many classes of small molecules remain inefficient to access using conventional methods. Enzymatic reactions, on the other hand, offer unparalleled potential for highly selective chemical transformations. By combining the power of modern enzyme engineering tools and advances in genome mining, The Renata laboratory aims to develop practical enzymatic solutions for traditionally challenging organic reactions, especially in the realm of C–H functionalization chemistry. The utility of these transformations will be showcased in the concise, scalable synthesis of bioactive natural products and their analogues, which in turn will serve as potential leads in drug discovery efforts or novel chemical probes to interrogate various cellular processes. These goals are pursued through collaborative efforts that take advantage of the uniquely interdisciplinary ecosystem at Scripps Research. Research projects are designed to be multi-faceted, providing students with broad exposure to synthetic organic chemistry, molecular biology, enzyme engineering and medicinal chemistry to ensure that they are well-equipped for future careers in both academia and industry.

I want to understand the origin of structure and matter in our cosmos. Some questions that interest me include: How did the universe first get populated with particles during the hot big bang (reheating after inflation)? What is the nature of dark matter (with focus on axions, vector and higher spin dark matter)? Can we probe the intrinsic spin of dark matter from astrophysics? My expertise lies in exploring the nonlinear dynamics of cosmological fields -- both in the context of the early universe and the contemporary universe. On the mathematical side, I am fascinated by solitons, their interactions and their relevance to cosmology. I have also delved into problems related to understanding aspects of Hubble tension, Dark Energy, gravitational waves, CMB spectral distortions, Black hole accretion discs and exoplanets. I tend to get really excited about teaching and public outreach.

As experimental physical chemists, the overall goal of our research is to understand the frequently complex structure-function relationships in biological processes and to use this information to inspire innovation for materials design. Practical goals in materials engineering include minimal cost, maximum efficiency, and optimized longevity. As our experimental and theoretical methods to study nature’s molecular-scale design principles have improved, we have begun to understand that one reason nature can be so successful is that her engineering strategy often differs from ours. Whereas humans usually design materials with a single, well-defined function, nature often acts through redundant or degenerate channels that are individually not as efficient, but collectively, and in the face of damage or wear, outperform their synthetic cousins. Obtaining clues from the biological structure-function interplay presents challenges for theory, experiment, and data analysis. When we study one molecule at a time, we eliminate ensemble averaging, thereby accessing any underlying conformational complexity. However, we must develop new methods to increase information content in the resulting low signal-to-noise single-molecule data. Thus, our research efforts have focused on three specific objectives necessary to achieve the overall goal discussed above: 1) Develop experimental data acquisition and analysis methods to optimize information retrieval in single-molecule and single-particle spectroscopies. 2) Characterize biological examples of heterogeneous structure-function relationships. 3) Identify, understand, and optimize heterogeneous structure-function relationships in synthetic systems.
