Democratic societies claim to be based on the rule of law. This course examines what is required of a society that treats every individual equally regardless of a person“s status or influence. We will analyze the relationship of politics and the law in the distinct historical and national contexts of the contemporary US and post-war Germany, as well as exploring the topics of crimes, guilt, punishment and vigilante justice in selected literary texts and films.
