In this class, we will explore E.M. Forster’s “The Machine Stops” and Jeanette Winterson’s Frankissstein, each of which lends itself to new questions about what it has meant to be human and how that meaning may be shifting.

In this class, we will be using Humes’ Garbology: Our Dirty Love Affair With Trash along with Alan Weisman’s The World Without Us, a projection of our planet without human-caused environmental degradation, to take stock of our own production of trash and depletion of natural resources and incite real change.
