From Amaterasu to Zen, through Buddhism, Shinto, folk tales, and more, the course begins with early evidence and proceeds through history up to contemporary popular media, highlighting the unique innovations and global relevance of Japanese culture. FWIS 177
This course explores the forms and contexts of storytelling in Buddhism, with a broad eye toward literature, visual arts, and performance. Students engage in both creative and academic writing to understand the importance of narrative in Buddhist cultures and different approaches to writing in the modern day. Mutually Exclusive: Cannot register for FWIS 177 if student has credit for FSEM 109.
